Forget the "rules".
1. Match colors, not prints. If the colors look good together, it's likely that the prints will mesh well together too. It's really a matter of personal preference. If you're not comfortable about the idea of mixing prints to begin with you can always stick to black and white.
2. Break up your look with solids. If the print mashup is too much for you to handle, just layer your look with some solids to calm things down.
3. Have fun. The most important part about mixing prints is having fun. You want to stand out and make your look pop. The options are endless. Mixing prints is a bold statement there's really no wrong way to go about it. According to street style stars, the more bizarre the better. As long as you wear it with confidence you'll be sure to pull it off.
I wore navy pants with flowers that had hints of orange, when I came across the burnt orange bandeau I knew it would be a perfect match. The contrasting colors allowed the different prints to really stand out. I layered with a white long sleeved puffed shirt to calm down the look and really shed focus onto the prints. Lastly, I slipped on a great pair of standout black and gold striped heels, which really complimented the look because they didn't match any of the colors in the print.
